Best Food in Philadelphia: Your 2026 Hot List
Philadelphia is a fantastic city for foodies, and I think it’s underrated. I’ve traveled the world through its cuisine, but as my hometown, I take great pride in everything Philly, from cheesesteaks and cheap eats to swanky happy hour deals, fine dining and new elevated hotspots. This guide pulls together all my Center City favorites, so you can eat your way through the City of Brotherly Love. My new favorite is listed last, and it’s the one I’d send you to whether it’s your first visit or tenth.
The Best Cheesesteaks in Center City Philadelphia
You can’t do Philadelphia without a cheesesteak, and the ones worth your time in Center City cut through the hype and simply do it right. The real debate isn’t Pat’s vs. Geno’s out in South Philly, it’s which Center City gives you the best cheesy chopped meat and toasted roll. My full guide ranks the spots that get the ratio right, from the classic Whiz-and-onions to an excellent chicken alternative. I always order mine with American cheese and onions. My wife goes for provolone and sautéed mushrooms.
👍 My favorite is Cleavers. If you want a classic cheesesteak done right without waiting in an influencer line, get the chopped ribeye with American on a seeded roll. It’s about $20 but splits between two easily.

The Best Restaurants in Center City Philadelphia
When you want an elevated evening out, Center City has plenty to offer, particularly around Rittenhouse Square. The sit-down scene covers James Beard winners serving Israeli and contemporary American, an omakase counter, a classic Italian tasting menu, and a wave of new spots doing things you won’t find anywhere else in the city. My full guide covers where to book for 2026 and what to order once you sit down.
👍 My favorite is Dancerobot, the creative Japanese spot from chef Jesse Ito of Royal Sushi. The Wagyu cheesesteak and the konbini-style egg sando share a menu with delicate raw fish, and the happy hour is a great deal.

The Best Happy Hour Spots in Center City Philadelphia
Happy hour in Center City can keep your costs down, with $2 oysters and $10 martinis around Rittenhouse and Midtown Village. You can find raw bars and cocktails, or food-forward deals that feel like dinner. My full guide lists eight spots worth building an evening around, including which offer daily deals and which stick to weekdays.
👍 My favorite is Rouge on Rittenhouse Square. I go for the $10 martinis and the $2 snack menu of oysters, pierogi, and pretzel bites. It’s a genuine bargain, especially with a view of the park.

The Best BYOB Restaurants in Center City Philadelphia
Philadelphia’s BYOB scene turns a great meal into an affordable one. Center City has plenty, from Italian pasta places to small chef-driven spots and brunch places that let you bring your own mimosas. My full guide covers the best for 2026.
👍 My favorite is Trattoria Carina at 22nd and Spruce. The fresh pasta and the meatballs are the best order, and also the cacio e pepe, ok, everything is great.

The Best Food at Reading Terminal Market
Reading Terminal Market holds more than 75 vendors under one roof, and it’s the single best place to sample your way through Philly classics in one stop. The trick is knowing which stalls to visit first and how to time it, since the Saturday lunch rush is real and the Pennsylvania Dutch vendors close Sunday and Monday. My full guide covers the eight stalls worth building a trip around, plus how to navigate the crowds and the parking.
👍 My favorite is Tommy DiNic’s. The roast pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone is the sandwich Adam Richman once named the best in America, and the line moves faster than you think.

Best Food in Philadelphia: Frequently Asked Questions
What food is Philadelphia known for?
Philadelphia is known for the cheesesteak first, but the food runs much deeper. The roast pork sandwich rivals the cheesesteak locally and many consider it the better sandwich, and the city is strong on Italian, a deep BYOB scene, soft pretzels, and the stalls of Reading Terminal Market. If you want a short list to eat first, get a cheesesteak, a roast pork, and a soft pretzel, then book one proper dinner around Rittenhouse Square.
Where should I eat in Center City Philadelphia?
Start at Reading Terminal Market for a great sample in one stop, then build outward from Rittenhouse Square, where most of the best sit-down restaurants, happy hours, and BYOBs are located.
The five guides above are organized by category, so you can match each meal to the occasion, a fast cheesesteak for lunch, a BYOB for dinner, a happy hour before, and a market trek the next morning.
Is Philadelphia a good food city?
Philadelphia ranks among the best food cities in the country, with a run of James Beard winners, a strong BYOB culture, and a cheesesteak-and-roast-pork tradition no other city matches. It’s also more affordable than New York or Washington DC for the same quality.
What is the best area to eat in Center City Philadelphia?
Rittenhouse Square is the center of Center City dining, with the highest concentration of restaurants, happy hours, and BYOBs within a few walkable blocks. Midtown Village around 13th Street is the other strong pocket, and Reading Terminal Market is at 12th and Arch near the Convention Center. The guides above are sorted by category rather than neighborhood, so you can pick by craving and the areas follow.
🏆 My Personal Pick
This is a hard one, because Philadelphia is my hometown and I love all five of these guides. If I have to send you to one place right now in 2026, it’s Dancerobot, the new Japanese spot near Rittenhouse from chef Jesse Ito. I recommend it to everyone, whether it’s their first trip to Philly or their tenth, because nothing else in the city is doing what this kitchen does. The Wagyu cheesesteak and the egg sando are pure fun, the raw fish shows Ito’s Royal Sushi pedigree, and the happy hour makes it easy to go back. That’s why I think it’s the best food in Philadelphia. If you want the classic side of the city instead, go to Cleavers for a cheesesteak done right without the influencer line.
Where to Stay in Center City Philadelphia: My Top Picks
Budget
- Motto by Hilton Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square is where I’ve stayed more than anywhere else in the city, with tiny European-style rooms in a location that’s hard to beat, and it’s home to Condesa and El Techo, two of my favorite food spots in Center City. Upgrade to their largest room for a little more space and privacy, and know that the bathrooms are right by the bed in a lot of rooms, so this one suits solo travelers or very comfortable couples.
- Club Quarters Hotel, Rittenhouse Square offers the same small-room, great-location trade, and the rates are some of the most affordable you’ll find this close to the square.
Mid-Range
- Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square carries the French theming you’d expect from an Accor property, and the high tea is worth booking even if you’re not staying the night.
- The Warwick Hotel Rittenhouse Square Philadelphia has a lobby beautiful enough that we shot our wedding photos there when the rain moved us indoors, and the staff could not have been better about it. The restaurant has gone through several iterations over the years and the current one is very good.
- The Bellevue Hotel, Unbound Collection by Hyatt is a historic building on Broad Street with real character, and it’s been freshly restored down to the original millwork and mosaic tiles. Pergola on the 19th floor is worth a visit even if you’re not staying, and the high tea is one of my wife’s favorites in the city.
Luxury
- Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center occupies the top floors of the tallest building in the city, with a 57th-floor infinity pool and Jean-Georges dining that’s a staple of the Philadelphia food scene.
- The Rittenhouse Hotel is the most classic Philadelphia luxury hotel right on the square, and Lacroix downstairs is one of the best fine-dining options in the city.
🍪 Final Bite
- For a classic cheesesteak done right, head to Cleavers.
- For the most creative meal in town, book Dancerobot.
- For a $10 martini with a park view, catch happy hour at Rouge.
- For fresh pasta with no corkage, bring a bottle to Trattoria Carina.
- And for the best sandwich in the market, grab the roast pork at Tommy DiNic’s.
